Embark on a Wild Adventure at African Lion Safari

Board an air-conditioned tour bus at African Lion Safari and journey through 750 acres of reserves home to over 1,000 exotic animals. Zebras graze just metres from your window, majestic lions lounge in the shade, and elephants create ground-rumbling encounters as they pass nearby—creating a unique safari experience in the heart of Ontario.

The adventure extends beyond the reserves as the “African Queen” boat safari carries you across scenic lakes where white-handed gibbons, ring-tailed lemurs, and black spider monkeys inhabit shoreline habitats. Board the “Nature Boy” train to ride through another 18 hectares of reserve, or learn from animal presentations featuring up-close encounters with parrots, eagles, vultures and more. The park operates from spring to fall, making it an exceptional warm-weather destination.

Plan for the Wake Up the Wild experience between June and September, where you’ll witness lions during their morning meal, hand-feed Canada’s largest giraffe herd, and capture exclusive photo opportunities before the park opens to other visitors.

Immerse Yourself in Natural Beauty at the Royal Botanical Gardens

The Royal Botanical Gardens spans over 2,100 acres, transforming each season as their collections flower throughout the year. Spring brings magnolia and cherry blossoms in soft pinks, while summer transforms the rose garden into brilliant colour. Autumn transforms their 27km of nature trails into golden tapestries accented with late-season blooms, and winter offers warm retreats in their Mediterranean conservatory filled with tropical plants and succulents.

The gardens host signature events that transform the curated grounds into dynamic cultural experiences. The summer Music in the Garden concert series features Canadian artists, both upcoming and the renowned, performing in natural amphitheatre settings, while RBG After Dark offers evening social experiences with live music and craft cocktails amidst illuminated landscapes.

Time your visit to their floral blooms. Visit in May to experience one of the world’s largest and most diverse lilac collections, or in June to witness the  rose garden’s first flowering. Check seasonal bloom schedules before arriving to experience specific collections at their optimal viewing periods.

Hike through a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve on the Bruce Trail

The iconic Bruce Trail traces limestone cliffs along the Niagara Escarpment for over 850 kilometres, with some of its most dramatic features easily accessible within the region. The trail leads to spectacular waterfalls where water cascades over 20-metre limestone cliffs—Webster’s Falls and Tiffany Falls showcase this geological artistry particularly well, with viewing platforms that bring you close to the flowing water.

The trail also winds through diverse ecosystems that tell the story of southern Ontario’s natural heritage. Dundas Valley Conservation Area offers peaceful forest walks through rare Carolinian ecosystems that exist in only a few protected areas across the province. Further west along the trail, Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area in Milton provides panoramic views that extend to Toronto’s skyline on clear days, demonstrating the remarkable geographic scope visible from these limestone lookouts.

Choose your outdoor adventure between May and November. From viewing waterfalls at Spencer Gorge Conservation Area to exploring ancient ecology at Crawford Lake Conservation Area, follow the Niagara Escarpment through the region’s natural corridors.

Connect with Indigenous History in Six Nations

Six Nations of the Grand River, Canada’s most populous First Nations reserve, offers guided cultural experiences that connect visitors to authentic Haudenosaunee traditions spanning over 600 years. These experiences in Ohsweken reveal how traditional governance, seasonal ceremonies, and agricultural practices remain central to this thriving Indigenous community.

Chiefswood National Historic Site preserves the childhood home of renowned Mohawk and English poetess E. Pauline Johnson, whose literary work helped establish Indigenous voices in Canadian literature. Close by, Her Majesty’s Royal Chapel of the Mohawks, another National Historic Site of Canada, stands as Ontario’s oldest surviving church with over 250 years of continuous history documented through eight remarkable stained-glass windows and is the resting place of historical Mohawk leader Joseph Brant. The Woodland Cultural Centre was once a residential school but has since been preserved and transformed into an icon of cultural resilience. Take a self-guided tour through Six Nations history and view over 50,000 artifacts, extensive exhibits, and interactive displays that honour traditional and contemporary Indigenous culture.

Continue your Indigenous learning at Kayanase Greenhouse, an Indigenously-owned ecological restoration business specialising in cultivating native Canadian plants, or join Six Nations Tourism for a day of cultural exchange with knowledgeable guides sharing Haudenosaunee history and culture.

Experience Aviation's History at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum houses and maintains over 40 historic warplanes as a living tribute to the RCAF’s role in global conflict and peacekeeping. Many of these planes still take to the skies in spectacular flying demonstrations, and you can purchase flight experiences in authentic historical aircraft.

Inside the museum, the “Making Freedom Fly” exhibition combines modern technology with historical artifacts to tell compelling wartime stories. Interactive displays include an immersive dome showcasing colourised historical films, life-sized digital avatars sharing wartime experiences, and augmented reality tours exploring aircraft engineering up close.

Get up close to the legendary Avro Lancaster—one of only two airworthy Lancasters remaining in the world. This massive WWII bomber, with four Merlin engines and an impressive wingspan, showcases the pinnacle of 1940s aeronautical engineering. Visit on Canada Day for the Lancaster’s birthday celebration, complete with special flight demonstrations that honour both the aircraft and the crews who flew them.
