The Art Gallery of Burlington, in collaboration with Craft Ontario, is organizing the first Canadian Craft Biennial to be held August 19 to October 29, 2017. The biennial will include a national master craft exhibition, an emerging craft maker exhibition, as well as a two-day conference (one day in Toronto and one day in Burlington). The conference will be presented with multiple partners in both cities. An international ceramist will be invited to present recent work in a solo exhibition, as well as to conduct master workshops and deliver the keynote address. Up to ten Canadian makers and two curators/writers will be invited to participate in a ten-day residency. The writing residency will be under the direction of Studio Magazine, which will publish their final piece in one of its following issues.

Drawn from the Permanent Collection of Canadian Ceramics, this exhibition traces the history of ceramics in Ontario over the last forty years. Starting with the refined functional ware of Ruth Gowdy McKinley and her effect on the program at Sheridan College and elsewhere, this exhibition will look at the development of the more sculptural approach by younger artists such as Reid Flock and Mary Philpott.
