Wild Teas of the Forest Experience

The program will encompass an interpretive identification hike, medicinal education of plants, and plant sampling through the means of drinking wild edible plant teas.

  • You will obtain ancient knowledge of identification and medicinal application of wild edible plants within our local forests. This is a lost art that once was an important part of our everyday knowledge that we have misplaced through the generations.
  • Be empowered with the healing benefits of the wild plants that are in your own backyard.

After our nature hike, we will come inside for a warm up of wild teas and tantalizing taste of wild jams!

Experience Details:

Join us in the Grand River Valley at the Five Oaks Centre, One Bethel Road, Paris, Ontario.

Introduction

We will gather for introductions and outline the itinerary of the program. The guides will go through an extensive safety talk and risk management. (10 minutes).

Wild Edibles Hike

Our guides will lead you through the forest of Five Oaks in an interactive way that will have you seeing the outdoors in a whole new light. The forest is alive in a different way during the winter season and we will investigate and discover what the winter woods has to offer. We will explore the trail by identifying an array of trees, plants and birds along the way. Be treated to a taste of the abundance of winter wild edibles that nature has to offer. (one hour).

Education Talk

We will arrive at the Summer Centre to sit by a cozy fire and learn in depth the medicinal properties of the wild plants we will be sampling as tantalizing teas. Dried, fresh and pictures of the edibles will be on display for us to investigate and explore. Be taught harvesting and preserving techniques for prolonging nature’s bounty. (30 minutes).

Tea Sampling

While warming by the fire we will then indulge in the sampling of the wild forest teas. You will choose a pottery mug and be served a variety of flavoured teas from a selection of plants, trees and fungus. Treat yourself to local honey from Vanessa’s Bees to sweeten your tea. We will smell, taste and savour the teas as we work our way through the samples. You most likely will discover new favourites that can be further enjoyed by having more! (30 minutes).

Question/Answer/Good-byes

We will all join around the fire for a learning circle where we pass the talking stick to share what we learned and enjoyed during the program. (20 minutes).
