Quilt of Belonging

Peace by Piece: Stitching Together Canadian Stories
July 11 to August 16
The Cotton Factory, 270 Sherman Ave. N., Hamilton, Ontario

A richly hued portrait of the human family, Quilt of Belonging is a 120 foot (36 metres) long collaborative textile art project. Its 263 blocks portray the rich cultural legacies of all the First Peoples in Canada and every nation of the world at the dawn of the new Millennium.

Quilt of Belonging is a collaborative work of art whose mission is to recognize Canada’s diversity, celebrate our common humanity and promote harmony and compassion among people.

This monumental artwork, Canada’s most comprehensive textile art project, is the work of volunteers from Victoria to Newfoundland to the Arctic Circle. From across Canada, participants were invited to contribute their talents and ideas, reflected through the prism of their cultural backgrounds. The range of materials is astonishing, from sealskin to African mud-cloth, from embroidered silk to gossamer wings of butterflies. Read more on the origins of the Quilt of Belonging.

Hamilton Halton Brant region is proud to be one of only three stops on the 2017 Ontario tour of the Quilt of Belonging.

Centre[3] for Print and Media Arts is an artist-run centre dedicated to promoting print and media arts in contemporary artistic discourse. As a production, exhibition, education centre and animator of community arts, Centre[3] supports both traditional and experimental print media and media art practices. The centre encourages research and innovation and provides forums for discussion and examination of critical and theoretical issues. Centre[3] supports artists in the development of their professional endeavours and acts as a resource centre for the visual and media arts community.

    Centre[3] printing demos:

Letterpress printing, a process by which many copies are produced by repeated direct impression of an inked, raised surface against sheets of paper. into the "bed" of a [portable] press, then inked<span mce_="" verdana,="" geneva;"="">, and then pressed against paper, at which point the ink is transferred from the type, creating an impression on the paper.

Screen printing: a stencil method of print making in which a design is imposed on a screen made of fine mesh, with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance. Ink is forced into the mesh openings by the squeegee's pass, transferring onto the printing surface (paper in this case) during the squeegee stroke. As the screen rebounds away from the substrate the ink remains on the substrate. One colour is printed at a time.

**Both of these demonstrations will be simplified versions of what each medium is capable of in a proper and well-equipped studio.

Fibre artist, Chandra Rice, upcycles garments and cloth by eco-printing on them. Fascinated by extreme bioregionalism or microhabitats, she delves into the natural and built environment that directly surrounds her, exploring the cultural and community meanings and uses of the space, and what either grows or can be found in a space. Hamilton is a particularly rich source of microhabitats; an old industrial steel town nestled in the rich natural landscape of the golden horseshoe. She is working on a series of pieces connected Hamilton's changing identity and its place in the larger Canadian arts community. In this demonstration, she will use a collection of items gathered around the Cotton Factory to print on swaths of silk. Come see what a 100 mile diet looks like for fibre artist. Free to Participate.

Watercolour painting need not seem mysterious or difficult! It's not about drawing and you need no experience to begin – creativity is the right of everyone; not the "gifted" as we've been trained to think. Watch me use various tools and techniques that show you what watercolours can do and what they're really about. Relinquish control, allow the water and the paint to do its natural and beautiful dance. The more you try to force shape, blending, or the final result, the less you gain from the experience. Painting with watercolour can be a relaxing, Zen activity that requires you to live in the moment. Let me show you how incorporating the creativity of watercolour can provide you with life balance, joy, and inexpensive self-therapy! This demonstration is for Absolute beginners. People who believe they possess no creativity or those who are afraid to try but feel the pull.

Creativity is for EVERYONE. Watercolour painting is relaxing, adds vibrancy and colour both literally and figuratively to your life, and can be an excellent way to de-stress, provide balance, and live in the moment. You don't need to know how to draw, you need no previous art training, or a studio. All you need is a good teacher to motivate and inspire you. Let me show you the joy of watercolours and some techniques that are so easy you won't believe it! This is NOT a paint night. You don't follow step by step instructions to accomplish the same work as everyone else – you'll actually learn skills you can continue to use at home and you'll finish an original of your own to take home.  Watercolour painting takes up less room than acrylic or oil painting, is typically less expensive, and you can create more than paintings (we do greeting cards, bookmarks, and gift tags at my workshops). What are you waiting for? There is a fee to participate. Click on the link below to find out how you can secure your spot today.

Don’t judge a book by its cover." Is a popular saying in Canada. The same metaphor could be applied to people, encouraging you to look beyond preconceived stereotypes to the person beneath. That's the purpose of the Global Hamilton Connect’s Human Library program. Global Hamilton Connect is an organization of immigrant young professionals and international students who chose to make Canada their home. Rather than taking a book off the shelf, you will time with our members- a human 'book' - in hopes that your conversation will be an enlightening perspective on the experiences, aspirations and understanding of belonging of new Canadians from across the world.

Participants can engage in guided or open ended conversations on the journey of these newcomers to Canada, the opportunities and challenges they have found here and their perspectives on Canadian multiculturalism.

“Who Made My Clothes? “ movement is all over the media, and sustainable fashion is finally making it’s mark.

Where does the raw material come from?  How is it processed and prepared? We’ll start with viewing an award winning short documentary, Field to Fashion, then chat about our local Ontario wool, how it is prepared, and what we can make with it. Participants will be able to get their hands on samples of local wool, plus see traditional preparations of fibre for spinning and the hand spinning process itself. We’ll make simple spindles and play with fibre while making it in to yarn.
